A recent research article that ACTUALLY USES ANALYSES WE TEACH IN INTRO STATS

 You have to walk before you can run, right? The basics we teach in Psych Stats help our students walk, but they are not typical of published psychology research. It is difficult for Psych Stat instructors to find good examples of our analyses in recently published research (for an exception, check out Open Stats Lab ). Ace's science fair project about Tom Brady: How to use as a class warm-up exercise

Stick with me here. I think this would be a great warm-up activity early in the semester. My boy Ace had a research hypothesis, operationalized his research, tried to collect data points using several test subjects, and measured his outcomes. Here is the original interview from  Draft Diamonds  and  Newsweek's story . 1) How did he operationalize his hypothesis? What was his IV? DV? 2) Did he use proper APA headers? Should APA style require the publication of pictures of crying researchers if their findings don't replicate? 3) This data could be analyzed using a repeated measure ANOVA. He had various members of his family throw a football as different PSIs and he measured how far the ball traveled and calculated mean for three attempts at each PSI. 4) His only participants were his mom, dad, and sister. Geoff Cumming's "The New Statistics: Estimation and Research Integrity"

Geoff Cumming Geoff Cumming gave a talk at APS 2014 about the " new statistics " (reduced emphasis on p-value, greater emphasis on confidence intervals and effect sizes, for starters). This workshop is now available, online and free, from APS . The three hour talk has been divided into five sections, and each sections comes with a "Table of Contents" to help you quickly navigate all of the information contained in the talk. While some of this talk is too advanced for undergraduates, I think that there are portions, like his explanation of why p-values are so popular, p-hacking, confidence intervals can be nice additions to an Introduction to Statistics class.

Center for Open Science's FREE statistical & methodological consulting services

Center for Open Science (COS) is an  organization  that seeks " to increase openness, integrity, and reproducibility of scientific research " . As a social psychologist, I am most  familiar  with COS as a repository for experimental data. However, COS also provides free consulting services as to teach scientists how to make their own research processes more replication-friendly .  As scholars, we can certainly take advantage of these services. As instructors, the kind folks at COS are willing to provide workshops to our students (including, but not limited to, online workshops). Topics that they can cover include:  Reproducible Research Practices, Power Analyses, The ‘New Statistics’, Cumulative Meta-analyses, and Using R to create reproducible code (or more information on scheduling, see their availability  calendar ). Andy Field's Statistics Hell

Andy Field is a psychologist, statistician, and author. He created a funny, Dante's Inferno-themed  web site that contains everything you ever wanted to know about statistics. I know, I know, you're thinking, "Not another Dante's Inferno themed statistics web site!". But give this one a try. Property of Andy Field. I certainly can't take credit for this. Some highlights: 1) The aesthetic is priceless. For example, his intermediate statistics page begins with the introduction, "You will experience the bowel-evacuating effect of multiple regression, the bone-splintering power of ANOVA and the nose-hair pulling torment of factor analysis. Can you cope: I think not, mortal filth. Be warned, your brain will be placed in a jar of cerebral fluid and I will toy with it at my leisure." 2) It is all free. Stephen Colbert vs. Darryl Bem = effect size vs. statistical significance

Darryl Bem on The Colbert Report I love me some Colbert Report. So imagine my delight when he interviewed social psychologist Darryl Bem . Bem is famous for his sex roles inventory as well as his Psi research. Colbert interviewed him about his 2012 Journal of Personality and Social Psychology article, Feeling the Future: Experimental Evidence for Anomalous Retroactive Influences on Cognition and Affect, which demonstrated a better-than-chance ability to predict an outcome. Here, the outcome was guessing which side of a computer screen would contain an erotic image (Yes, Colbert had a field day with this. Yes, please watch the clip in its entirety before sharing it with a classroom of impressionable college students). Big deal? Needless to say, Colbert reveled in poking fun at the "Time Traveling Porn" research.
